State Laws
Federal crimes attorneys

The federal crimes attorney is chosen by the defendant or appointed by the court from either the public defenders office or, as in California, a panel of private attorneys who agree to represent indigent persons charged with a federal offense.

If the defendant is represented by an appointed attorney, that attorney has the same responsibilities and duties to his/her client as a retained attorney, but the appointed attorney is compensated by the government and not by the defendant.
