Jainism is a gentle, ancient Indian religion whose followers believe that the universe is layered and eternal, with no boundaries of time, volume or motion. They believe too, in the soul's eternal life.
Jains practice ahimsa, a philosophy of utter non-violence, and will not harm any living thing. This extends to eating: Jains will only eat that which will not harm the animal or plant from which it is taken. Any act of violence is considered to negatively affect one's karma and have a negative influence on the next incarnation.
As do Hindus and Buddhists, Jains believe in karma and reincarnation. However, Jains also believe that liberation in the form of enlightenment may be attained primarily through asceticism.
