Who is at risk?

Nearly everyone is exposed to asbestos at some time during his or her lifetime. The good news is that most people never develop symptoms of mesothelioma or asbestosis. Generally, people who get sick because of exposure to asbestos were exposed to it on a regular basis, most often in a job where they worked directly and routinely with the material.

Not all workers exposed to asbestos will develop an asbestos-related disease. The risk of developing mesothelioma or asbestosis varies with the type of industry in which the exposure occurred and with the degree of the exposure.

The asbestos contained in finished products such as "popcorn" ceilings and acoustic walls and tiles poses little risk to health as long as the materials are not damaged or disturbed by sawing or drilling into them in a way that release asbestos fibers into the air. When someone inhales asbestos fibers, however, the exposed individual is at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease.
