Merck estimates that more then one hundred million prescriptions were written for Vioxx between May 1999 and August
2004. The company states that approximately 20 million people in the U.S. have taken the drug. A Kaiser study
estimated that 25 out of every 10,000 people who took the drug suffered serious cardiovascular problems.
The FDA conducted a study of 1.4 million people in California and found that 69 out of every 10,000 people
had either serious coronary disease or sudden cardiac death resulting from their use of Vioxx. That puts
the number of people injured by the product over 140,000. Another study put the fatality rate just over 40%. This
puts the total number of alleged deaths from Vioxx in excess of 61,000. This number is limited to the number
of deaths in the United States only.
