Meridia is a weight-loss pill that has been found to increase blood pressure
and cause heart problems including death. Meridia has now been associated
with an increasing number of deaths, including deaths from adverse cardiovascular
effects. The diet drug was first approved in 1997. Meridia was reviewed by the
FDA and was initially shown to increase blood pressure and heart rate for many
people. Meridia is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories and is sold all over
the world. It is estimated that as many as nine million people worldwide have
used the drug. There have been two cardiovascular deaths in Italy, and the
use of Meridia there was suspended. There have also been over one hundred
serious side effects reported. The number of international reports of life-threatening
side effects has prompted consumer advocacy groups to pressure the FDA to
consider banning Meridia from the market.
