Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. There are about 3,000 cases reported in the United States every year. When someone breathes or swallows asbestos dust the microscopic particles or fibers lodge in the lungs, throat, esophagus, pleural linings and stomach lining where they damage the cells and cause scaring and inflammation. As much as forty or fifty years later, the cancer develops and attacks the cells of the mesothelium, which is a thin lining that encases the heart and lungs.
